The "bulb" is called a THUM and literally translates as a Garlic or Onion. Found mostly on Western Arabian knives from Asir /Meccan region, though it is also found on some Southern Arabian pieces, notibly the Hadramauti GUSBI. I guess the shape can be anything the maker dreams up as some are only very small while others are quite big.
