Name of Moro Ruler

Greetings all,

My two cents.
From the engraved script, I'm guessing it was the name of the owner of the lantaka (rentaka in Malay). My guess reading of it is 'Pemaka Datu Muhammad Iskandar...

I have never Empu Djeno met personally, though I have viewed him at work in a CD on keris culture produced by Malaysia's Museums and Antiquities Department.

I'll certainly try and visit the places you recommended. An Indonesian friend will be showing me around so getting to those places will not be a problem (though I've been warned...

Strange Words

Dear Dajak,

Sorry but couldn't help you with the cryptic words. They're definitely not in Malay, Minangkabau or Arabic, so I'm assuming they're in Acehnese or even Gayo. :)

Talismanic Papers

The text is a bit small but from what I can see, I'm assuming the papers are actually what is known in the Malay archipelago cultures as Tangkal, a form of talisman. Maybe if you can enlarge the...

Keris Pair

The sarung of the Straits Bugis keris seem to indicate that it has some age to it, with nice flashing grains. Would love to see an even closer look of the blade though.

Hi Nechesh,

I must say your friend's effort is commendable. Even in Malaysia, where the indigenous sarung forms are slightly different from Javanese ones, I have encountered a few improvised...

Swords in Kuching

Hi Vandoo,

I think I've seen the very same swords you've mentioned in Kuching. I guess you meant the Iban decorated Piso Podang in that row of antique shops on the Kuching waterfront. One or two I...

Being a Malay, the keris is part and parcel of my nation's culture and history. On one hand, it is the ethnic sidearm of our people, just as the Dha is that of the Thais and the Kukri for the...
