The combination of this Y shaped hilt and a human face is new to me too.
With teh present USD/Eur rates it came relatively cheap. It is definately not very old, but considereing the style of the carving I think it must have been a piece for actual use, and not a tourist item yet |

Arjan,
The top hilt is unusal. Is it newer or just rare? Does the rest of the mandau also carry unusual features? Maurice, thatīs a mean looking hilt figure Michael |

As I know nothing about these, is there a significance to the faces? Diety, totems, other?

It looks like a baby laying in his cradle with those little legs in the air... Now seriously. A pity the front has a missing broken part. Normally the faces are the other way around! (Can you send me more images of the whole sword please?) |

This weekend I managed to find time to take pictures of the latest acquisitions. Among the mandaus I found a couple of familiar faces for this gallery...

The small figure is a loose inlay, original to the handle.
See also the small face on the side of the handle. |

It's been a bit slow at the face gallery so here are my latest.
The first two with small bonus faces on the sides too. Michael |

The same handle as I posted in post #26, only from a different angle.
Because I like this image more as I posted earlier of the same handle, I decided to upload it again in my favorite thread! |
