i got a reply to my two love-notes to epray.

reply one was the std. reply letter saying as i was bidding on a nasty weapon i had to prove i was over 18 by registering a credit card -still not sure when that was a legal means of age proofing - i have never seen any pub accept a credit card as proof of age. it indicated i should try registering again. i did, via site map, and the 'register credit card' item under 'sellers'. tried a bid, got same results. it wants me to re input my visa details but then tells me the number is wrong (internet explorer) or 'page not found' (firefox). i have written that support guru back a less than calm reply.

another (female this time) reply to my other billideux, said she could see my account and the six items i was watching and there was no reason she could see why i could not bid. she suggested deleting all my cookies and trying again. this did not work. she also suggested i send her details on what steps i take to provoke the error. i have done this with included screen dumps. i have also told them i am not alone and that other of my colleagues have the same problem. i also sent her copies of my drivers license with my DOB on it, and my bus pass (for y'all back home in the US, i get a govt. issued photo id/pass to ride the bus for free when i am over 60).

the saga continues.

all y'all with the same problem should contact epray to report it, maybe they'll take it more seriously.

wonder at the timing:

ebay illegal knife sales reviewed

the tone of the article is of course slanted a bit...

reading some of the other sidebar articles, they seem surprised that after outlawing law-abiding people from owning guns, that knife crime went up. (knife crime also includes the illegal use of a knife to defend yourself or just carrying one that the police don't like). when they outlaw knives, they'll be surprised that baseball bat crime goes up, when they outlaw bats, they'll....ad infinitum. another article exposes some of the creative use of statistics.

not unexpectedly, on the same news pages,
man shot outside school

shows how effective banning a tool is, criminals can always buy them on the black market.

well, the other shoe has dropped.

seems my last post was a lead-in for tonites 'watchdog' consumer affairs program. watchdog imported a number of knives from the states which are illegal here, by purchasing them thru ebay in the states.

because they imported them illegally, they are not going to be prosecuted and punished, but we are. ebay in a knee-jerk reaction is terminating the sale of ALL knives, with an exception for domestic cutlery starting tonite. all existing listing will be removed overr the next few weeks.

i did not see any mention of an exemption for collectors or antique knives/swords, etc.

ah, well - the end of a good source. and the UK takes another step into the dark side.

***Change to policy regarding sale of knives on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie*** 09 February, 2009 | 08:00PM GMT We wanted to inform you of a change to our policies regarding the sale of knives. All knives except cutlery will be banned from sale on eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie. This will impact UK, Irish and international sellers who currently list knives for sale to buyers on the eBay.co.uk and eBay.ie sites. Over the last year we have made several changes to our policies regarding sales of knives and also Samurai swords to ensure that only legal knives are available on the UK and Irish sites. However, the criteria for what constitutes a legal knife are increasingly complex, and this step is necessary to help further protect our members and provide them with the highest safety standards. We will be updating this AB post shortly to ensure that any sellers of knives have full notice, details and timings for the changes. Thank you for your support in continuing to make eBay such a vibrant and trusted marketplace. Regards, The eBay Team
Vibrant and trusted marketplace for name-brand consumer electronics, gadgets and baubles. Arid desert for the collector.

I fear that the reason there is no mention of an exemption for antiques is that there will not be one.

What a fecking joke eBay has become!
So how exactly will they stop people logging into the .com site and buying anything they want from US users or for that matter the myriad of cheap truly offensive 'knives' that chinese sellers will of course still be listing?

No, the only people this will hurt are the UK collectors.
