Hi Radliegh,
You are probably right, find who the figures are supposed to represent and you'll find the use for the knife. It has martial style decor on the blade which might be a clue, I noticed a horses head, I think, so maybe cavalry veterinary surgeon the list of possibilities is longish may be even something quite mundane who knows.
