Looked to have some age and the belt looked interesting. Not my area of interest really, so I'll defer to to others more knowledgable.

Ian, looking forward to your impression of that dha. An interesting group. The two Tibetan pieces look c.1950 to me.

I agree that the Tibetan items look late. The fittings of the short sword or dagger that Rick got are in some ways crude, but I think he got an interesting piece with that unusual suspension piece.

I will hold my opinion on age until I have the piece in hand but I wasn't concerned about that. I was quite pleased to pick this example up due primarily to two things. First, the suspension belt is quite rare. I have yet to see an example with one and I am of the opinion the belt is much earlier than the sword. Second, the scabbard has an inscription which is another fairly rare feature. Tibetan inscriptions(and I am assuming the inscription is Tibetan) are not common. I think it is an example made for use within the culture with a very interesting belt(anyone notice the kitthruma(?) mask on the lower end of the belt) and interesting inscription and perhaps was used in important festivals. I can comment more when I have it in hand.

Cool set of auctions. Thanks for posting this, Ian.
I'm interested to hear your and Rick's opinions when you get the pieces in hand. I like the hua bua tip on your dha. Looks like a solid, old sword. I was suprised the ivory handled dha hmyaung went for so much. |
