Peurise Teumaga (this one good)

Hi all, finally I have found a good one!! A dear friend of mine told me that in his opinion these shields, even if old, were maybe done for tourists. What's your opinion? there is anyone that can show an old picture where we can see an Aceh warrior with this kind of Peurise? Thank you

P.s. ah the "handle" is a my masterpiece

I think even older ones were made of real rattan and brass.

All Perurise Teumaga are made of brass or bronze. One of rattan would be a peurise awe.

A Peurise is a small round Aceh shield. They are then divided by what they are made of.

Peurise Awe - Peurise made of rattan

Peurise Kajee - a Peurise made of wood

Peurise Nilo - a Peurise made of buffalo hide

Peurise Paru - a Peurise made of stingray

Peurise Teumaga - Peurise made of bronze or brass

Flavio thats a great example, congratulations. You may want to look in the book Blanke Wapen ( I will double check the spelling on that I may have it wrong ) or at the Collection in the KIT for more pictures of these.

just to complicate the terms, times ago I asked to Adni an opinion about my peurise teumanga. He answered so : The term “peurise teumanga” also meaning “perisai tembaga” in Malay, literally means a brass shield. The smaller ones are called “penangkis” or in English, a buckler, and the bigger ones are called “perisai/peurise” or shield in english.

Thats a problem I always have trying to figure which term is most correct with all the different dialects. Or which spelling is correct and which is what it sounded like to the person writing it ( who often does not know the language well) I have not seen Utami in a while but I hope he sees this thread. He also can give us a local perspective on it.

For later reference.
Bought this one from an old lady whose father brought it back somewhere around WW2. The back side went black patinated by age.
