A. G. Maisey,
I am sure that your contrasting border solution would look far better than the wood plug but it would also significantly modify the sheath throat and that change couldn’t be undone. While it is true that I widened the throat slightly, it was by only .5mm or less on each side so I don’t think that small amount matters. I deliberately glued in the wood plug with a 50/50 mix of liquid hide glue and pine tar which is solid enough to hold the plug firmly but can also be fairly easily undone and is susceptible to heat from a heat gun should some future owner wish to undo my work. The only other change I made to the sheath was to repair the chip in the buntut with a piece of wood. That repair is permanent (I used zap-a-gap cyanoacrylate glue) but it is also invisible so no future owner would even know the repair was made. I’m pretty sure I could make the border but I’m not 100% certain. The wood for the border would have to be very solidly glued in place before carving out the center, or sections of the border could chip out during the work. If I made a mistake, getting the ruined piece out to start again would be a bear and might damage the wranka beyond repair. I’ll admit it, I’m a chicken. Sincerely, RobT |
