Thanks VANDOO!!!!!

I am terrible at searches so here is the link to help others...

Its good stuff! But very short.

Are these from Indonesia, PI or maybe even somewhere in-between? Were they worn on the person or hung up on a wall? It seems they are meant to hold a sword... or some kind of weapon.

Thanks Spunjer, I am getting old and senile...

Gee, this is just what I need... a new area to collect (my wife is going to kill me and then hang my new sword from it).

These AFAIK are Indonesian ; possibly Javanese in origin .
The flat part goes downward and the piece is worn at the small of the back .

As for the decoration ; it would not be outside the cultural norm to beautify such an everyday item . I'll bet there are guys in America that have flames painted on their riding lawnmowers .

Let me see if I have this straight… the holders come for Indonesia, likely Java (but the carvings look like they my not be), they are hand carved by their owners and worn on their back to attract chicks (unless it is hanging on a wall), are decorated with custom flame jobs or redneck racing stickers (if Visayan – then it is a “do not touch” sticker)… gee, I think I am just about ready to write a book on it now.
