Golden Kukri
Hello, I recall seeing a golden handled kukri a week ago and if I am not mistaken it ended last night. Unfortunately, I was out of town, I was not able to watch it end or even cast my lowly bid. Can some one provide me a link to it or just the ebay item number. Really appreciate it. Thanks again, Chris

Here are the other pictures for our archives. I believe it to be North Indian with gold over copper. Notice the second edge on top of the blade. It went for $1900!

I put in a last few seconds bid that wasn't even close. I think that the blade may well be wootz. Agree or disagree? Steve

Probably the only non-muslim weapon I really wanted.

Stunning and unique piece!
I see the under bidder is a member of our community, perhaps he'll be prepared to share more? Gav |

Another however pushed the envelope to the enth degree and nearly got it, I'd be interested to know more on his thoughts....still a bargain too in my opinion. I have of course left him un-named in case he wished to remain anon. Gav |

wow what a kukri.
the seller seems to think the fittings are brass? But surely looks to be gold. Whats up with the blade along the spine? has a style i havent seen before, the pics arent clear but looks like almost liked its double edged? one of a kind no doubt, would love to hear what spiral thinks of this one? |

The spine is a T-spine until you get to the second edge on the back. Yes a unique piece. Indian versions of the kukri are various.

Lovely piece, Looks gilt on thick brass to me, as Battara says clearly Indian, nicley forged T spine, must be from between 1875 to 1930 I would think, interesting hanging loop for wall hanging, {should be two, with chain between.} Ive normaly seen that on 20th century pieces. Apart from kaudi bieng in existance not that much Hindu symbolism. I wonder if it could be a Sikh piece? Definatly a prestigious kukri, though! Spiral |

I have a very different point of view with regards to this segment of your comment, definately not for wall hanging. This is likely by geography, anywhere from Bengal territories to the Dehli Sultinate...in my opinion likely western regions of the Dehli Sultinate and a personal side arm of an important individual who had relations with the northern borders. The single loop aspect is also pure Indian as per the images attached and note the daggers in figures 215, 216, 221, 222 & 224 of Arts of the Muslim Knight. Excelent info & examples Gav!
Had not seen the single loop feature on a kukri before. What is its purpose? Spiral |

I have not seen any period paintings close enough but I suspect, as these weapons all appear to be sash mounted, that it was for a safety chain. Fig 215 quoted above shows a small silver loop chain, perhaps the sash was fed through this loop before being wrapped on the body. Other suggestions , a decorative or votive charm might have been hung from here....but I think a safety chain/loop....who wants to drop anything on the run..... Stabbing indeed Spiral.
I have had great honour in handling many fine and rare Kukri as many of you know and I hope the owner doesn't mind me saying say but this example is the best Kukri I ever handled in form, contruction and quality. |

Indeed Gav!
It certainly looks a quality piece... Only one bit , I don't like, that of the blade riccaso extending below the hilt line. Both aesthetically & practically that seems unnecessary to me. But Id gladly home it for further study! Spiral |
