Excelent info & examples Gav!

Had not seen the single loop feature on a kukri before. What is its purpose?

A good question mate.

I have not seen any period paintings close enough but I suspect, as these weapons all appear to be sash mounted, that it was for a safety chain.
Fig 215 quoted above shows a small silver loop chain, perhaps the sash was fed through this loop before being wrapped on the body.
Other suggestions , a decorative or votive charm might have been hung from here....but I think a safety chain/loop....who wants to drop anything on the run.....

That Sounds logical Gav, Any chance of a scan of fig.215 as I dont have that reference work? If you have the time of course, emails cool.

Sure thing, I should have some time to shoot one across later this weekend along with better images of the large Chirra presntation Kukri.

Thats cool Gav,Look forward to it , it would be cool if we can work out the "history" of the dia chira kukri & the origins of its inscriptions between us. I suspect micrometers will also help!
