Question a parang from Africa ?

I'm selling this piece. When I first saw it, I immediately thought it was a parang from Southeast Asia.

But the man I got it from told me it came from a collection bought from the missionaries here in Belgium. It had been especially made for them for use and/or exchange in Congo, our former colony.

At the base of the blade the maker's name has been engraved. It reads :

Mson A. JAMART
rue de l'hopital 7
Bruxelles

Next to the maker's name, there's another engraving of a chaplet (I hope I use the right word). This was added to prove it was owned by the missionaries.

I'm not particularly interested in this piece, so I want to sell it. It's in mint condition.....and extremely sharp !

Total length : 61 cm

Thumbs up

I looked it up and it seems that the manufacturer or retailer of this piece still exists in Brussels

Au Grand Rasoir - Maison Jamart has been Court Supplier for ages. And once you have entered this store, you know it for sure. Once you become king or queen this is the only kind of shop you would be deigning to visit. Knives, scissors, razors and pocket knives are on display in the window. Here you will find anything that is sharp. And once inside, you might think you just went back forty years in time. Magnificent counter, of course, for even the shop's sign itself already evokes nostalgia. There is a workshop where cutlery is (re)silvered and where knives and scissors are ground and repaired. When dining in the Royal Palace you cut your finger - here's the guilty party.

Look also at the other pieces, perhaps there's something interesting.
