Default Pappenheimers

These seem to be popular on here.
Having recently bought the gilt one (36" blade) after peeking at it for 2 years, I found a few things;
Versions with no knucklebow are a thing (I've seen 7 or 8 now), in fact there's a near identical one on Pinterest which annoyingly doesn't give its picture source. According to Matt Easton this relates to certain styles of use eg Thibault and a flat grip used. The gilt one could be used that way though its 1 1/8" wide at the hilt, its fairly light.

The second surprise was that the ricasso is stamped with the two marks attributed to Daniel de Servale of Milan, active 1549 to 1565 (according to Kinman and the Wallace Collection catalogue). I'm wondering what the blade was originally fitted to or intended to be fitted to. Not my first upcycled blade. If anyone has any more info on him, beyond the example in the Wallace Collection, I'd like to hear about him. I'd also be interested as to what hilts these blades would have been paired with in the mid C16th - I'm assuming a rapier, possibly Italian? Grateful for any photos.

The other diamond bladed one (35" Solingen blade) you've seen before. It really is superb and I'm still looking into the Latin on the blade to see if it indicates anything at all about the owner, especially the bishop / saint figures. Definitely one of those hefty diamond section blades that European cavalry liked in the first half of the C17th.

Third is a rapier bladed version - last pic - I've had for a while which you've also seen, marked with IOHANNI and an indistinct Toledo style crowned 'reversed z'.

I do like these, though they keep dragging me away from English stuff.
