Question Genuine Yataghan??

Hello all,

Been reading this forum for a couple of months now before I started collecting a couple of weeks ago, I (hope to ) have learned an lot! Thanks everybody.

I have been offered this yataghan, although I tend to trust the seller, I do have my doubts. To me, the handle looks too new in a way compared to the blade and I find the shape of the ivory /bone handle odd to say at least. I am very anxious to read your much appreciated opinion. Thanks in advance!

I think it is fine....
I see what you mean by the "handle", but my guess there is nothing wrong with it. The blade was grossly overcleaned and all the inscriptions are gone. My guess it is mid-19th century.

The handle is made of 2 slabs of walrus ivory. Looks like the original koftgari inscriptions were in silver. The strap in the middle seems to be of silver filigree. NIce piece. I too vote mid-19c.

This looks authentic to me, if a bit zealously cleaned.

The excellent photography is distinctive and familiar.

Default Thank you all for your replies.

You have all been very helpfull in taking out the cognitive dissonance that was between my not so distinguished and rather small ears last night :>)

@ not2sharp : that is a very very nice yataghan, the ears are indeed quite distinguished too.

@ Ariel : if you - as a yathaghan expert, correct me if I am wrong - think it is OK then who am I to think it is not..

Thanks all !
