Sunggingan Keris Dress
Yet another eBay keris that I didn't expect to win. I've been interested in a keris with sunggingan dress, so now I have one. Just from the pictures, the work appears to be just fair, nothing great, and the blade seems average. I'm guessing it's a fairly recent piece. I like it and I got it at a low price I could afford, so it will work for me.

I agree all around. Recent keris, recent painting. Finding an old examples of sunggingan is rare. I have an old Bali example. But if the price was right and you like this then all is good.
Can't see the details too well in these photos, but i would say that as these newer examples go this one doesn't look too bad and it represents an keris ensemble that would be very expensive if antique. |

Here are a few of my sunggingans, all recent, all done by Pak Legiman of Pajang during the late 1980's.

Thank you for those pictures, Alan, his work is beautiful. I don't know much about Pak Legiman, could you give a brief bio?
Thanks! Dan |

Neither do I Dan. He was a craftsman who was working in Solo at that time. He did wayang puppets, keris decoration, and other similar things. Some people said he was the best working then, and amongst the best ever. Maybe he was for a while, but then his eyes started to go, his quality dropped off, and he turned to other means of support. I forget exactly what he went into, maybe some sort of food production, or it might have been something to do with clothing. I really forget.
A correction. I said all these were done by Legiman. Not true. He did all the keris, I don't know who did the two wedung scabbards, because I ordered them through a third party. |
