Seeking info on a knife with a story
Hello, I bring before you, what is the pride of my collection.I do not, however know much about it.What I do know was told by the man who gave it to me.In WW War 2, the Allies hired Ghurkian Mercs/Scouts to fight the Japanese, and as the story goes, they were one day trading/interacting with the troops when the brother of the man who gave me this knife, supposedly bartered a mechanical ink pen for it from a ghurka scout, which would put it's origin somewhere in Nepal if it's true.I estimated it to be 75+ years old, maybe older, it is 10 inches in length, with a blade width of about 1 1/2.The blade is over a quarter inch thick.I do not know what metal the fittings on the sheath/handle are, but they never seem to rust or corrode, I suspect they made be silver I have no idea What I am seeking is where this knife is actually from, what wood/metal is used on it, and if it has any proper name for the style.
Points of note, while it has no maker marks of any type that I've noticed,The blade release on the sheath is finely crafted and functions smoothly, the handle almost appears to have been formed around the blade itself, no seams or fastening pins are visible, only the pins that hold the wood pieces on can be seen barely, and they almost look like they were concealed on purpose. The belt loop on the sheath has a clever key and lock looking, hinged fastener letting it be easily removed/put on one's belt. I've heard it may be from India, indeed the style does not seem to match the few Ghurkian knives I've seen, though the sheath seems to have Middle-Eastern design influences.Any info on this is appreciated. |
