pls help identify this kattar
Hi all,
Can any of you give me some information regarding this Katar? (and also regarding the correct spelling of it... Katar, Kattar, Kahtar etc.) Thanks. |

Very nice katar. Like the wootz and gold. The first pictures show Krisna wooing a cattle maiden (perhaps his wife whose name escapes me).

Welcome. My guess would be North India, mid 19th century.
Did you take those photos yourself? Nice work. |

Thanks, Battara. I did not expect to get info regarding the story behind the embossment. Very interesting. Thanks.

Thank you, Andrew.
I am flattered... I did take those pics myself. So you suggest it's from North India and from around the mid 19th century. Good. Thanks again. |

that is beautiful... the clean cut lines... the patination... the gold and wootz...
I have seen "katar" written as Bundi dagger, kataram, katara, jamadhar, etc. |

The other side shows
A maiden playing the veena, deer are attracted. This is a standard depiction of a musical mode, TODI, often shown as this in a picture.
The other side is plainly Krishna and Radha. A REALLY nice piece! |
