Yes nothing Negriod but something very Gallic. A French calonial officer rather like the Napoleon 111 head on coins. It looks like African work to me, French West Africa.

PERHAPS IT WAS CARVED IN AFRICA BY A FRENCH SOLDIER IN HIS SPARE TIME. I KNOW THE BRITISH OFFICERS CARRIED SWAGGER STICKS PERHAPS THE FRENCH OFFICERS DID ALSO. THE SHAFT LOOKS A BIT LIGHT FOR A EFFECTIVE CLUB AND ITS TOO SHORT FOR A CANE (ALTHOUGH NAPOLEAN WAS SAID TO BE VERY SHORT ) SO MY GUESS IS SWAGGER STICK OR BATON.

I think this from the Ivory Coast carved locally for a French soldier a swagger stick most likely? 1890s as far as age goes. I should have it in a few days will look to see if it was cut down from something longer. The position of the head seems awkwardly placed for a cane or walking stick?
