I'm depressed, sooooo......
I'm so depressed because Lew won't to adopt me so I have decided to add another sudanese dagger to try to reconstruct a collection that could resemble Lew's wonderful pieces . pics from seller (strange pommel but I remember to have seen something similar before )

Hi Flavio

Thank you Lew
Do you remember a final of this kind on other daggers? Could be also a more recent replacement but I will tell you only when I will have it in my hand (hope soon!) Seller says that rings and final disk are made of bone.... Flavio P.S. maybe I'm wrong but I remember that David (KATANA) has one with a final like this ????????? |

Flavio
The dagger seems to be 1940s vintage this type of finale is probably original it looks like horn to me. Lew |

Nice example!
I got a chance to see Lew's pieces at the forum meeting in Baltimore, and he really has some superb examples of all types of Sudanese dagger forms. |

Sorry my friend, I do not own a similar example. Very nice piece And as you said, the finial does seem unusual .... the question is ....what could its function be ? Perhaps it denotes rank or some other symbolism Best of luck in your efforts to match Lew's collection, I've tried .... unsucessfully ....so far Kind Regards David |

Ok it's arrived.... The strange end pommel is a recent restoration (stopped with some kind of putty), while the original material used for the small disks is white (maybe dust of ivory and some glue???) and crystalline in structure, so I have already start a "new" project on this and here are some pics that I think will be interesting for others here. Now what I need it's a silver cup for close the whole thing, maybe Josè

Flavio, that's a real shame I am disappointed for you .
Personally I would contact the seller, I don't remember him mentioning the damage/repair, if he is ethical and honest he should at least offer you a discount. The blade looks good.....is it possible that part of the handle is ivory ? If you look at the top surface of the 'white rings' is there a sort of criss-cross pattern ? Regards David |

I'm sorry to here that this hopefully it can be restored. Unfortunately this is a problem when buying things on Ebay some times we win and sometimes we get screwed It has happened to me more than once so you just chalk it up to experience. Lew |

Hello David and Lew,
no, he has not mentioned the repair, but remember that the dagger it's arrived firm and the pictures you see are of a moment when I have already started to disconnect the handle. I think that after the restoration that I will do the result will be fine maybe the price I have paid it's a bit too high, but what is done is done.... here is a drawn I made to understand better the construction technique (yes it's ivory) |

Hello Willem, thank you. I don't think that on the sudanese daggers that have an ivory pommel there was a coin, I see always a silver cup...
Kind regards Flavio |

Thank you Gene and David.
David, I have found a quite old vague of necklace (I think that was of my grandmother). I have sawn, with a little saw for iron, the vague in two parts. Than I have glued to the half part of the vague a segment of a silver bracelet (the little balls you can see on the pics of the dagger around the cup). Than I have used a pin of iron to collocate all (ah there is another smaller vague at the top of the cup, also this in silver). In the inner part of the cup I have used putty. I hope that my poor english is clear enough P.S. I think that the two vagues are silver, maybe a low grade silver |

David, do you mean the last and bigger disc of the handle? It is the original, made of ivory.

Yes, sorry Flavio, I had forgotten that the disc was there originally ....I should have re-read the posting. Although in your pictures it looks whiter and 'cleaner' than the rest of the ivory used in the handle. Or is it caused by the lighting at the time of the photograph. David |

Repairing an arm dagger.
Hi everybody, I am posting on this old thread as it seems the most relevant to my request for information. I recently swopped for a Sudanese arm dagger, in generaly good condition other than not having it's tang washer, and now being loose. I am going to replace this with an old Egyptian coin.
My query is this, the tang is very narrow, almost wire like, and a loose fit in the hole through the grip, would it originaly be packed in position with a filler of some sort. Or would it simply be held by the peening over of the tang. Btw the dagger is the spitting image of this one, which belong to another member of this forum, the only visible difference the number of turned rings below the pommel disk. Camera bust, so no pics of my own sorry. Last edited by David R; 16th February 2012 at 10:43 PM. |

Can you post Close up pic of the pommell from above so I can give my opinion on which way to go with the repair. Lew |

At last, got some pics done courtesy of a friends phone camera. As you can see the tang is wire thin, and the pommel flat at it's apex, but a lot of space around the tang.
