Hi Michael that is an Rattan shield covered with textiles
Like Willem means .

Yep, the textile is under the stars and the nails.

I only know 1 shield with the textile still there and that is in the 'Legermuseum' in Delft.

Sadly their website does not have any pictures.

Willem you schould visit Nijmegen they have enough.
I have also one you see the textile under the stars .
