Wonder why these status wear weapons often had simple wooden sheath and not adorned with the same fittings we see on the hilts?

Probably because when carrying a rencong on their waste, the only visible was the hilt, as the scabbard had been stuck in a piece of cloth/belt, and therefor not visible at all?

nice images, and i would like to know the type of wood used for the sheath's of Acehnese rencong? They allmost always have the similar light brownish orange colour, some are made in one piece some have a kind of spline that is inserted later into the sheath. So hope someone can tell me the type of wood that is used on these.

I'm still trying to get my head around this absolute pile of pirate booty! Thank you for sharing. Regarding the Aceh scabbards, the intricate patterns are certainly ornamentation but if they also have talismanic function perhaps covering them up with bling could be problematic.
