Could the guard and ferrule be aluminum? If so, this would probably be a WWII era piece.

Ian I would say no. The former patina is correct for silver. Aluminum doesn't so much patina as it oxidizes into a white powder. So I would say that this is more likely early 20c and not WWII.

I agree that the fittings are indeed made from either silver or a silver alloy. As Jose has pointed out, the way it was oxidized and the color it was when it was sold definitely points to the fittings being made of silver. I was watching this piece as well, but due to circumstances beyond my control my bid was canceled sometime before the auction closed. If I were asked I would date this piece to the late 1800's. My congratulations to you on a wonderful score and new addition to your collection. If and when you ever get tired of looking at it (and quite a few of your other items) you know where to send them.
