			Hi,

I purchased this pendok (without the balinese sampir) and I wonder about its origin. It is very long (42 cm) and wide (4.5 cm at the top), and made from silver alloy (see pics before and after cleaning). The style of floral decoration is peculiar as well as the flat buntut. The inside gandar is a modified balinese piece (cut at the tip and filed on the edges for matching the pendok). The matching blade is javanese or from South Sumatra but not an original fit so not an useful indication. Has anybody an opinion about the area of origin of this pendok? Thank you and best regards Last edited by Jean; 3rd June 2015 at 09:37 AM. |

Could be also a Bugis form from Sumbawa because it's so long.

Thank you Gio and Detlef and I am also considering your 2 opinions as the most probable ones.

My N° 1 guess was Sumbawa because of the style of decoration, size, and vicinity with Bali/ Lombok (balinese scabbard), however a specialized collector from Sumbawa did not confirm the Sumbawa origin. If the pendok is from Sumatra, it should be East Sumatra (Riau Lingga or Jambi), or may be Aceh but the piece is very big and I never saw a similar one from these areas? Thank you and best regards Jean Last edited by Jean; 5th June 2015 at 09:18 AM. |
