yeah, you got that right: W
![]() here's one that i didn't quite understand: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWA%3AIT&rd=1 for $500.00 tho? it's nice and all, but not at that price. i reckon bidder's depression kicked in... and to think that he was offered $2000.00 for both before the bidding was over, lol... that was too funny ![]() |

For a given quality, flashy krises and kerises always fetch more, I guess.

...IMHO good presentation by the seller helped out a lot, too. i remember there was an ivory hilted kris that came out about 6 or so month ago, and it 'only' went for $750.00...
still shaking my head on the other kris, tho... |

Oh yes, the pictures are very important. They can make good pieces look dull, or make mediocre pieces look like a thousand.
![]() But sometimes, we pray for bad pictures because then, experience comes into play and there is usually less competition. ![]() |

Well, Tagalanao, years ago I paid around $250-300.00 on eBay (would have to go back to my records to find the correct amount). It was without scabbard and a 1920s blade. I tested the material and it is swaasa and silver bands with ivory. I have since made a scabbard for it, also with silver and swaasa bands.
The one you posted is really nice and it looks like there are swaasa and silver bands as well. By the way, here are pictures of the scabbard and hilt just for fun ![]() |

I was going to bid on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...e=STRK:MEWA:IT ; nice old piece. Don't worry about the beak, the whole pummel is gone; could of been ivory at one time, but still went for a good buck.

I put a bid on that barung, but didn't want to pay more for something that wasn't fully intact. I'm surprised that it went for so much. Anyways, I'm with you that it couldn't have been ivory. If I had won that barung, I would have had a new pommel carved out of carabao horn to compliment the brass punto. Carabao horn would have been more appropriate than ivory in this case IMHO. |

IMO, the ivory hilted Barung's beak had broken off and had been reshaped. It looks off balance with a large plume (0.02).

Kino,
I asked the seller about it but he sent me a picture that didn't show any signs of a break. Maybe it broke off a long time ago? Anyway I also think it looks unbalanced no matter what. Michael |

Of course, if it had an ivory beak, it could have gone for $2000.
![]() VANDOO - art investment? Hadn't thought of that. ![]() BluErf - I was very lucky. The pictures were terrible and thus I was the only one bidding on it. Yet I could see the potential beyond the pictures and asked for extra emailed pictures. ![]() I also agree with the other barung being not of ivory. Silver at most but probably horn or brass. |

Not ivory, but went for a lot more than I thought it would.

Wow Ian, that does seem a bit much. I literally have this kris' identical twin ( my blade is only 21 1/2"). I paid $235 for it just 6 months ago and my sheath is both intact and original to the blade. BTW, mine was not an ebay auction.

Rick: I don't see anything special about this one -- somewhat unusual hilt maybe, but otherwise not very old and not very interesting.
David: You paid about what I would expect this one to have gone for. I guess someone was in the holiday spirit, or had a little too much holiday spirit. ![]() ![]() |

Yeah I'm with you guys on this latest one: nothing spectacular about it, certainly not $500 worth. Nechesh you paid right for yours.
I thought Moro leveled out - this shows otherwise (or just a bidding war ![]() |
