A modern depiction of the first three letters (iota ι, eta η·, sigma σ‚) of the Greek spelling of Jesus (Ιησούς). The bar above the eta denotes 'abbreviation'.

beautiful sword

in western christianity the meaning of IHS is Iesus Hominum Salvator ("Jesus, Savior of men" in Latin).
the first use of IHS in English Literature dates from the early 14thC .
herewith an example of a Pavese with IHS
