Well, since no one else responded I'll give it a go. It looks Indian or Indo-persian to me, and I believe its called a "tabar"
http://www.oriental-arms.co.il/item.php?id=1096 Based on the limited photo, the koftgari looks similar to a nagan sword I have, so late 19th - ealry 20th? Should be enough for you to know where to look for more info anyway! --Radleigh |

Thommo,
Interesting axe head you show, but could you possible show better pictures of the decoration? CourseEight, the axe head you give a link to from Oriental Arms – attached – is chiselled, and the one shown by Thommo seems to be koftgari, although I am not quite sure what it is. Besides from this, the form is quite different, both when it comes to the blade and to the back of the head, which is quite a bit longer. Although I don’t know much about weapons from, Turkey or the Osman Empire, I would rather think it comes from this area than from India. |

I stand corrected! I only included the Oriental Arms link because it was the only tabar picture I could find. And I said Indian because of my nagan sword. Further digging found this though so you're quite correct:

CourseEight,
Don't worry, the thing, which made me wonder was the very big back part of the axe head, and I started to have a look in some of my books, which said Turkish or Ottoman. My knowledge of these weapons is very little, so I may be corrected as well ![]() |
