I have problems to find any references on this klewang.
Does anyone recognise it or have any ideas of its origin? Michael |

Michael,
The cross marks on the back of the blade is something that I know from both Sumatran Klewangs and from an occasional mandau. So again, the sumatra Borneo mix... Bets regards, Willem |

Thanks for all comments.
Ben, I am not sure that it's a crowit, couldn't it just as well be a kembang kacang? On the handle which one in Sumatra do you mean? Willem, on the cross marks they also are found in other regions, f.i. Sulawesi. But I agree that they are common in Sumatra (nice marks on your example!). The ferrule, that looks a bit Filipino, is also confusing? And the "whale-shaped" handle? Arjan, I recognise some traits on the top klewang in the Spirit of Wood book. So I have checked with a couple of collectors familiar with Kelantanese klewang but they thought it came from Sumatra or Java. I have a couple of Malaysian klewang and parang but this one doesn't have the same feeling when I compare them with this X-klewang. F.i. with this Kelantanese one that is close to the one in the book (picture below). Michael Last edited by VVV; 24th April 2007 at 10:09 PM. |
