Hey Rick,
Interesting piece. You going to clean it up? The top part has a date (1015 hijri) and the rest looks like an imitation of Persian inscription (bandeh shah Abbas something) so I guess AJ will have a better chance in making sense out of it. Lotfy |

When I was much younger and used to do caligraphy, I used to be able to read these much easier, but 20 years of living in the West has put a dent to that. The top text could be Farsi or it could be Turkish, the year is as Lotfy stated, the rest, well i tried and tried but could not make much out of it. There is Bandah, which means Servant. If i presume that the maker did not know how to spell properly then we can make out a Shah = King, but it looks more like Benah which could mean building. Same goes for Abas, but the placement of the dots is causing me doubts. The bottom text is Arabic, I can make out Sakhar a lana fi, سخر لنا فی and it seems it is repeated, but I could be wrong. Sorry I could not be of much more help.

Thanks for the help so far, Fellas .
![]() It's not my sword; I have never handled a Kilij before and this one seems very light . I'm wondering if this might be a souvenir from an earlier time .. ![]() It also has a pretty good lenghthwise bend in the blade . ![]() Not sure if the script is done in koftgari or what . ![]() Interesting story behind this one; it belonged to a Gentleman's Brother who used to make home movies as a kid . He now has 4 academy awards under his belt . ![]() |

I dont think this is a touristy piece but the decoration is an imitation of Persian ones. I think this piece was likely made and used in Syria. Atleast the script was done there.

Thanks Lofty .
![]() No way this sword is from 1606 (didIgetthatright?) ![]() The current custodian of this sword is a charter boat captain from my town . Just trying to fill in some blank spaces for him . The handle is horn, the blade seems to be fairly springy, but kids at play can damage about anything . ![]() I think cleaning it would likely remove the decoration; it is quite rusty . ![]() |
