Hi Michael,

A couple of points.

One is that you neither need nor want a marine biologist, since they typically work with fish (or worms, or whatever). You want an vertebrate anatomist or a...

Vandoo,

I don't blame anyone for making a hilt out of a bit of bone, either, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was made before dugongs were listed as endangered species (in 2000, AFAIK).

The...

There's one of these corn knives for sale in a local hardware store. It's a simple bar of steel, one edge sharpened, with a handle on the other end. It's been there awhile, in part...

Thanks Jim,

Personally, I suspect that they learned the technology of ironworking after contact, since making charcoal and tempering with oil and water sounds quite colonial/European.

I've been poking around in omniglot (http://www.omniglot.com/), which has a number of scripts. I tend to agree that it's magical writing, but I don't know the system. The closest I've been able to...

I've seen similar shaped containers used with Japanese kimonos to replace pockets. That said, the designs do not look Japanese, only the shape and the way the strap is rigged.
