SE Asian rice sickle knife (Cambodian?)

This is a nice example of the rice sickle knife that is used widely in mainland SE Asia to harvest rice. The hilt is the wooden area capped by a carved snake head. The large curved wooden section is...

Hi Detlef,

Yes, I've read similar stories about these swords "reaching around" shields to cause damage, similar to the reported use of shotels. No less authority than Richard F Burton (The Book...

I now have this one in hand and can confirm that the scabbard was originally glued around its edges. The scabbard and hilt show some wear and may be from 1960-1980, perhaps later. The blade is clean...

Hi Detlef,

What puts me off a Visayan origin for the smaller knife is the full length tang and the form of the D-guard. Perhaps something from Cebu, but I think that is less likely than Luzon.

The stamped markings notwithstanding, this does not look like a 17th C blade to me. The steel shows no old patina or oxidation as best I can see. The course grinding marks suggest local manufacture.
