Jim that's interesting that some Patton swords were converted into knives.
Reminds me of very old dirks that also use sword blades dating to the 16-1700's.

I once had a M1913 sword and it was a very well made sword. The double edged blade would be better for cutting than the 1908p. Of course both had the same reach of a lance with the arm extended.

19th Alberta Dragoons 1908p sword

A nicely marked Canadian 1908p sword to the 19th Alberta Dragoons. They performed the last Canadian cavalry charge in history at the Battle of Iwuy on 10 October 1918.

Just a conjecture, that different sword fighting produced different attachment methods with some needing to be stronger. I like to think that Scots punch harder using their hilts.

I'm not well versed on early dirks, seems to be a keeper! Having the scabbard is a huge plus, many are missing their scabbards especially leather ones.

The ring is a stronger connection and would add time to the manufacturing and therefore cost. Your sword is possibly from a maker that had not made any other form and he stuck to what he knew worked?

I have a British 17760's to 1770's cavalry sword with the ring to secure the guard.
