Thanks for that but I don't think the blade is Wootz. I've taken a couple of pictures with a USB microscope. There is pitting and striation in the steel but I don't see a nice wootz pattern. :shrug:...

Contemporary? I believe ivory items dated post 1947 are illegal to sell in Italy so presumably this hilt is dated prior to that if it is indeed elephant ivory.

I think it is a very old form. Wikipedia states there are examples dating back to 1550 or so. I think the Britsh first came across them in the Gurkha war of 1814-16. Wikipedia is not...
