Those are heavy smallswords, my heaviest is the Spanish cup-hilted one at 640 grams and that has a 34.5 inch blade.

What I mean by military use, is that we know some officers would carry swords...

That is a lovely smallsword your friend has.

Regrettably it is often difficult to pin these down to a specific model or country since they were private purchase worn by both officers and...

Going by the visable casting lines, I'd estimate it to be closer to the 1970s than 1800s.

Interesting, this is the second time I've seen sword made up from a basket hilt and a Sudanese takouba blade.

The blade on the other sword used a 1828 pattern basket, and had a marked blade: ...

It was LeMarchant's intention for the 1796 Pattern light cavalry sabre to be a 'universal' sabre, i.e. used by all cavalry units including the heavy cavalry. It was because the later resisted this...

Personally I think the reeded ivory grip lends towards English origin. There is an abundance of late 18th Century English spadroons (of the type loosely grouped as the 1786 pattern but they certainly...

My two pennies on this topic.

1. Accidents happen and people die in the most random of events. This is just one of Murphy's laws. It's not inconceivable that a trooper practicing drills with sword...
