To me, that doesn't look like koftgari but more like true damascening.

Be very careful when polishing the blade for etching! Avoid polishing the carved areas. Do polish to 2000-3000 grit and do...

To me it looks like Persian wootz.
Why doesn't come out as in high contrast, I don't know as it can have many causes.
I found out the best etching results are on surfaces polished to 2500-3000...

Yes, Persian 19th century almost certainly wootz. It could benefit from revealing the wootz structure.

Interesting, but rubbing a pencil while exerting some pressure is hardly possible inside the cup and under the langet.

So I am thinking of oiling it, then apply a thin blade of putty on it and get...

Toledo punch mark?

I have received the rapier.

As I suspected, it has a punch mark on the ricasso consistent with the Toledo marks.

Unfortunately, it is mostly covered by the langet and very difficult to observe....

This is a Persian Qama... and a rather large one (73 cm / 29" and 813 g / 29 ounces).
It's like a big gladius. With pattern welded blade.

Honestly, I liked the blade better before the etching. This is neither a wootz, nor a pattern welded blade where the pattern of the steel has some intrinsic purpose. This is simply a laminated blade...

No, definitely not a weapon but a wood cutting and splitting tool.

The overall shape of the blade and the butted poll quite clearly show what it is and how it was used.|

(And no, the poll did...

Overall length is 114 cm, which is reasonably good for this type and age albeit it may have lost a couple of centimeters to successive sharpening and repairs.

Anyhow, the geometry of the blade...

Hello,

I am of the opinion this is NOT a Persian but an European trade blade.

I base my opinion on the configuration of the blade like the shape of the edge and the fullers.

Yes, the...

Yes, it appears to be Persian wootz but the etching is very poor.
You need to polish the blade to grit 2000 or even 2500 to be able to better reveal the pattern.

To me, it looks like a repurposed, probably broken, rapier blade.
The way the fuller ends in the proximity of the tip and how the tip is formed are quite obvious giveaways.
The ricasso of a rapier...
