This close-up from the less corroded side of the blade shows, to the left (which is the hilt end), an area of pattern-welding composed of two bands whose direction of straight pattern is opposite one another to form a herringbone pattern of intersecting lines forming nested Vs (>>>>>), pointing toward the tip. In the central and right portion of the photograph, the two omega-like iron inlaid devices may be discerned (click here for another, closer view), joined at their bases and, in this view, lying on their sides.
