My second Kamp
Hi all!! I know you have seen a plethora of these, but it's my second one and I'm really happy with it: nice blade lamination, nice carvings, nice patination of the wood, iron guard... I'd like to restore the hilt rattan wrapping so any suggestion is welcome!! I already find the old treads to how weave rattan.
Especially I'd like to know the width of the rattan I need. Attached are also a couple of pictures of Rick's kampilan, I'd like to do something like that. Thank you an HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Last edited by Flavio; 31st December 2008 at 05:20 PM. |

Hi Flavio,
Congrats, I like this one very much. Nice old patin on the hilt and especially I like the carvings at the bottomside of the handguard. Also the blade shows great lamination. When you consider wrap the hilt again with ratan, please don't use the "natural" light coloured ratan. Maurice |

Thank you dear friends!!!
Hola Miguel!! yes, you're right it comes from Erik Maurice, I will stain rattan for sure, I don't like the natural color, I will try to give a "lived" look at the rattan... or at least I will try Thank you Rick, you are very kind Can you give me the width of the rattan? the one used for the handle and the other crossing over the first one (yellow color)? Thank you so much! Dear Lew.... yes I'm too far from Africa, but I will try to find some african pieces in the next future! |

Hi Flavio, here are the widths of the rattan strips .
I hope you don't mind doing the conversions from inches to mm . The three bands on the handle are 1/32 of an inch wide strips; they are plaited double strands to make the bands . The outer wrap is of rattan a bit wider than 1/16 of an inch . As I say, if you'd like 360 degree shots of the overweave etc. I'll be glad to provide . That is an old hilt with a beautiful patina from long use . Good score !! Have you thought about staining the rattan with either strong coffee or tea ? |

Hi Rick, thank you so much!! Yes if you can I really appreciate 360 degree shots, thanks again and yes I was thinking of staining the rattan with a mixture of coffee and tea. Than I will pass on the rattan something like shirluk to protect and to make shiny the rattan.
Grazie Rick |

Hi Gonzalo, if you mean the "loops" at the side of the wood guard it's just a bar of iron bended to be an additional guard. I don't remember where but I see also pictures of kampilans that show on both sides iron guards (maybe one of these kamps is in the collection of one of our members)

Hi Flavio, thank you very much for the data. You are righ, the loops are only on the guard, I made a mistake. Interesting construction. I am not familiar with this weapons, though I like them. I hope you enjoy this nice finding.

Nice Flavio .
Are you going to carry on with the over wrap, or just leave it as it is ? |

Ok, I think it is finished, but I'd like to know from you what do you think on this: maybe I have gone over the restauration... I have added also an old (more than 100 years old) piece of rope, maybe it is better to remove it? what's your idea? and about the over wrapping? it's better the first version with a more simple wrapping? Sorry for the dark pics and the others with flash on, but here is already night...

Thank you Tim and Rick! So do you think that is not "too much restored"? something like a "fake"..... How much far one can go with the restoration?

IMO it's fine; I'd even darken up the overwrap a bit .
Are you having second thoughts ? |

Hi Rick,
I was thinking that maybe I have esagerated when I have added also the red rope... You know that if you believe that the rope is like an amulet, well in this case is really a non-sense to put the rope, but I have done this because another explanation, as Cato says, is that this pieces of rope were used also to assure a better grip... About the overwrap is just a bit clearer than the wrap under, just the flash do not show the real color |
