Default dagger series, nr2 rondel dagger with spiral grip 1470

this extremely rare roundel dagger was found in a channel in Damme near Bruges in Belgium together with a Ballock dagger.

tapering single edged blade with concave/hollow ground surfaces, thick disks with circle and dot decoration of two different sizes.
spirally shaped handle and quatrefoil decoration brass washer under the tang button. all in a unharmed Original condition

a similar type of dagger is depicted on an altar piece from 1469.
Although many rondel daggers remain to be shown in art, there have been only a very few preserved.

Hi Jasper,

I found this watercolored woodcut of late-15th c. date in the famous Agricola reprint of 1599.

Best,
Michael

Hi Michael,

thank you, very nice
it of a different type and a bit later than the one under discussion, but you can see some interesting details like the parry plate.
a parry plate with crescent shaped recess and serrated edge came around 1500.

best,
jasper

an extraordinarily beautiful ballock dagger with spiral grip and Multi-section blade , a waterfind in Holland.
since the blade is single edged it could go on as a knife and so avoid the city prohibition orders against carrying a dagger within the citywalls !
