A rehilted Gunong for comments
Hello friends,
I picked up this rehilted gunong on Ebay. Probably the original hilt had broken and someone stuck whatever they could find on it. It was ghastly but had a lot of potential. The blade is laminated, the fittings silver, and the scabbard is well made. The guard is made from a large Philippine coin. I got a piece of Amboyna burl and shaped it to an old style hilt. It's not perfect, but close to it's original glory. It was a fun afternoon project. Thanks for looking. Steve Ferguson As received: With new hilt |

Hello Steve, I'm just going to have echo what everyone else have already said, Great job!! Tell the truth now, did you do all of this without cutting yourself, or are you like me an nothing goes right until blood is spilled?

Thank you for the comments gentlemen. Fortunately, I had some good tools to work with. Belt sander, band saw, drill press, buffer, etc. It gave me tremendous respect for the craftsmen who did all of this by hand. What skill they must have had.

Very nice job.
The wood colour is perfect. I have something similar to do on a javanese pedang. But both my wife and the neigbours are not to fond of the sound of the belt sander in the evening. Maybe on a sunny saterday afternoon, now the weather is improving. Willem |
