Default Hilt Material Piha Kaetta

This caught My eye and I haven't begun to research it much. I'm wondering about the material the hilt is made from and the fact most that I've seen so far have a metal shank this one seems to have only the round peg running through it. There should be a cap but it doesn't appear to have been recently lost.
Thank you, Steve

Hi
I believe that possibly the hilt is from amber.I suggest that because of the transparency of the top of the carving and the red colour. Also the surface of the small parts that missing are the same like the surface at old amber carvings.
