Pangasinan dagger--"Port Sual"
Came across this interesting dagger on the internet here. It is an Ilokano style knife with the name "Port Sual" carved into the hilt. Port Sual is a shipping port located on the Pangasinan Gulf, about 25 km from the knife making center of Calasiao. The dagger appears to be an early- to mid-20th C knife. It is unusual to find knives that can be attributed specifically to Pangasinan Province.
The dagger is a simple style and resembles other Ilokano daggers with a stiletto blade, horn or wooden hilt, brass ferrules, and brass guard. It comes with a plain leather sheath. In appearance, it would be difficult to distinguish it from similar knives coming from Ilocos Sur, Pampangas, or in the past from Bulacan. However, the "Port Sual" reference suggests it was made locally in Pangasinan, most likely in nearby Calasiao. . |
