Ben,
Try to find Hands of Time: The Crafts of Aceh by Barbara Leigh. ISBN 979 428 110 7 Then there are of course dozens of old articles and books about Aceh but I think she has compiled most of it nicely together in her book. Michael |

Probably the amount of golden crowns only shows how rich the owner was?
Maybe you could find something in this article: De Sikin by P. Vermieren from De Vrienden van het Etnografisch Museum Antwerpen, XIV(2), 2 (1987). Haven't found it yet myself. But you are closer to Antwerpen than I am. Please arrange a copy for me too. Michael |

OK In "Hands of Time" they call the v shaped design at the hilt of the panjang and the rencongPucuk Rebung it is supposed to represent the sprouting bamboo. the figure at teh end of the hule mea apet is called duan tebu I need to get a good translation on that term. They describe it as representing the sprouting sugar cane.

I've never read anything on that. The crowns are the "Pucuk Rebung" and appear to be a vegatative motif. Maybe Utami would be able to tell you he is in Indonesia and has a good bit of information on Aceh swords. There is some reference in the small amount of reference material I have also about a star shaped decoration on the hilts called a tampok that is taken from the star shaped decorations on the top of the traditional royal Achenese hat that my help you with what you are looking for. I wish I knew more to offer you I will keep looking. I have found little more in Barbara Leigh's book and nothing more in Holly Smith's book. John |

John, I knew a little about acehnese weapon & culture.
Pucuk Rebung Motif Pucuk = the sprout Rebung = bamboo shoots. In indo malay rebung were used as food, my mother often cooked bamboo shoots curry This motif also can be found in their tradisional clothes, sarong and Woven cloth. Pucuk Rebung also can be found in other ethnic / region such as malay, lampung, riau, palembang and other part of sumatra. West sumatran / Minangkabau named this motif as Pucuak Rabuang . The Pucuk Rebong symbolised the fertility and the happiness in the life of humankind and the symbol of the life. Pic of Rebung Pucuk Rebung ( the tip of cloth ) on Tapis ( Lampung Woven cloth ), Pic of Pucuk Rebung on Songket Palembang ( Palembang Woven cloth ) Cropped & Sharpen image of original dajak pics These image clearly show the triangular-shaped pattern similiar to Pic of Rebung. Aceh Translation related to weaponry Daun = Leaf Tebu = Sugar Cane Daun Tebu = Sugar Cane Leaf Meu is verb Apet = jaga / kawal = Guarded Meu Apet = penjaga / pengawal = "The guard" Hulu = gagang = Hilt Peusangan = name of river / name of subdistricts in Bireuen, Aceh Beunteung = The fence that was made from bamboo Meutampo Meueh = Bersepuh Emas = "Gold Polish / Gold Plating" According to some acehnesse, the gold on hilt / handle / scabbard only can be made / owned for Panglima ( commander , chieftains ), teungku ( the noble ) and hig respected persons. Hope this helps Last edited by utami; 13th December 2006 at 07:46 AM. |

Once again Utami your comments have been a great deal of help. You are too modest about what you know about these swords
Thank you John |
