Default Pre1900 Philippine (Luzon) bolos

Just curious- who else collects old bolos from Luzon? Here's my favorite 3.

You've seen most of mine already, but for the sake of sharing, here's my older Luzon Bolos.

I'm not completely sure that the second one from the right is Luzon, but it's my best theory.

Enjoy,
Leif

Question Bolo from Lew Waldman's collection

I doubt this bolo is pre-1900, but it is a very nicely made and mounted example and I would be interested in anything members may be able to tell me about its age and origin. The grip appears to be of caribou horn with silver (about 88½ percent) ferrules. The blade is 13 inches long and 3/8 inches thick at its base with an unsheathed weight of 20.4 ounces.

This bolo came from Lew Waldman's collection and may be an unillustrated example he mentioned in a forum post in March, 2010. http://vikingsword.com/vb/showpost.p...8&postcount=14

Hello Lee,

Your nice bolo from Lew I would place around 1900, if 1890 or 1910, who could say it exactly. Like Lew stated in the given thread silver is seldom seen on bolos and most of the time by 19th century examples.
I let it to Xas, Ian or Jose to place it exactly in origin, I guess Middle Luzon.

Regards,
Detlef

Excellent sample! I'd place that as late 1800s, and Central Luzon does seem like a good guess.

Hi Lee,

Lovely piece! Carved horn with silver is one of my favorite Luzon hilt styles. I agree with the age assessments provided by Sajen and Xasterix. I would say very late in the Spanish colonial period, and the scabbard suggests Central Luzon/Manila to me.

Hilt may originate from one of several locations in Central Luzon, including the CALABARZON area.
