19th century twohander flamberg bearing sword...how were they made?
This huge 66" 19th century bearing sword was recently sold at an English auction house:
http://www.lawrences.co.uk/Catalogue...3/lot0079.html click the link for many photo's and a short description. The hammer price was 870 pounds. I did not bid on it because the tip of the sword was broken off. I've seen two other swords that looked almost exactly the same. I was wondering, how were these swords made in the 19th century? Were they actually forged or did they use plate metal? The 'flames' on the blade look way too even and regular to me, and I suspect they were made with some kind of machinery. And were these swords made for processional use or just for decoration? I've held one of them in my hands and it felt VERY heavy. I'm looking forward to hearing your opinion. |
