Another Unique Malay Sundang ... With All Silver Hilt
I picked this piece up last February and have recently had the missing silver bands on the scabbard restored(Thanks Battara!). It is another quite unique example of a Malay sundang. The blade is down right boring with no truly unique features and is of homogeneous steel. The hilt of solid silver(alloy) is the unique point, and...yes...it is solid and not silver over wood. It mimics the segmented silver or brass over wood hilts that are more typical. It creates a very heavy hilt that alters the sword's balance, but not terribly, and I actually like the way it feels in hand. The hilt makes for a very attractive combination with the black horn scabbard mouth(also restored) and silver bands.
Comments and observations are welcomed. Dimensions: Overall length: 29.5in Blade length: 23in. Blade's width at midpoint: 1.5in. |
