question regarding the ethno forums

I don't want this to sound like I'm complaining or anything, I'm not. Its an honest question that I was hoping someone can answer that has confused me for awhile now (moderator?)

Why are the forums on the Medieval Sword Resource Site only related to ethnographic arms and armour? Why the decision to drop the medieval forums like there used to be on here awhile ago? I know there are a lot more sites out there related to European and Eastern, and less on ethno, but in all sincerity, whats going on?

1. I think this decision is mostly due to the fact that very few people ever used the second forum.

2. I think we have a reasonable amount of discussions involving Solingen/euro and other blades. However for some reason, it seems that most of the people belong to one of a few communities - dhafia, keris-lovers, africans and caucaso-perso-turkish group. I honestly have no idea why we don't have too many eurocentrists, but we had our share of "basket hilted swords" and various rapiers.

Hi Mike,

Rivkin is correct. In recent years, the medieval forum just didn't get enough traffic to justify creating a new sub-forum when Lee switched to the current software.

Discussion of these weapons is absolutely welcome here, and I suspect that Lee would consider another sub-forum if the demand and need were present.

Thanks for the prompt answer. I had a feeling it had something to do with that. I have always liked floating around from one forum to another since I can only deal with the bickering and politics sometimes associated with one for so long. Then I will take a break, head to another and chat. When that one gets tiresome, I head to another, etc.

A couple years ago vikingsword was one of those reliefs, not to say I ever had any problems with anyone on here.

I have wanted to start my own forum for awhile now to cater to my interests, but not only would the wife kill me for taking more time away from her, we have a baby on the way and I run my own WMA school.

Never enough hours in the day...

While I am not a collector of medieval swords, I would personally like to see some examples posted here if you feel so inclined.

As Andrew indicated, the decision not to have a Medieval Forum on this site was based on the relatively infrequent use of the previous medieval forum site.

"Medieval" describes period but not place or geographic area (unless specified). Indo-persian blades could be medieval for one person and not that medieval for another person. IMHO: Its easier to classify medieval weapons by their ethnographic background. I agree with others that celtic, nordic, greece, eastern europe... etc 'd be welcome to this forum.

I agree with Puff. IMHO Ethnographical deals with the basic groups or divisions of mankind, which are distinguished by customs, language and characteristics. In that sense European and, all the sub groups within, surely qualify in this category irrespective of the time frame or era?

One man's culture is another man's ethnographic curiosity! From the European point of view, Indian weapons are foreign, but from the Indian point of view ....

European arms are ethnic, too.

We have discussed Polish Karabelas and Tatar Ormiankas. I see no reason not to discuss "European" swords.
Spain has an outpost in Africa and Turkey is in Europe

Bring them in!!!
