Lances from Bismarck archipelo and ?
Hi,
and now for the lances/spears. The one with the barbs comes from the bismarck archipelo. The barbs itself were made from the bone of the wings from flying dogs (bats), which my book tells me. Unfortunetely it was shortened at 140 cm, for the original length should be up to 300 cm. The second one I cant locate, may you can. It seemed also be shortened at 180 cm. It has nice carvings. Do anyone know the origin and the estimate length ? Because there were some more "normal" spears coming with them and I might replace the missing length with one of those ?? Put a picture of these also in this tread. Any suggestions welcome since then Dirk |

I would hazard a guess that the other spear is from the Massim region of PNG and the Trobriands.

new information
Hi Tim,
i have a new information since i got in contact with the Grassi museum in Leipzig, Germany, about these items. First i have to correct the orign of the lower spear. It came from Bougainville / Baku, northern Salomon Islands. (I should better read my texts ) The lance above most probably comes from the northern PNG region, formerly Kaiser Wilhelm Land, near Potsdamhafen which is Awaro now. best Dirk |

Hello Dirk,
I am pleased that I mentioned "Massim" which is nNorth PNG. Just a guess. My wife says I might not get my head through the door. It is a super lance I wish it were mine. |
