Default Software for collection?

Dear friends,
I am trying the last days to photograph and cataloque my collection, and is a job much more difficult and time consuming than what i imagined!

So i would like to ask, is there any software programme that helps with the cataloquing of a collection?

Something like a database from where you could retrieve easily some pieces based on origin, features (eg silver scabbards, ivory hilts etc) and store information for each piece like date bought, price etc.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,
Eftihis

I HAVE SOMETHING CALLED 321 COLLECT THAT DOES ALL THAT PLUS YOU CAN HAVE UP TO 2 PICTURES WITH EACH ITEM, THERE IS A WAY TO ADD MORE PICTURES BUT I HAVEN'T USED IT.I GOT IT ON EBAY SEVERAL YEARS AGO AND I AM SURE THERE ARE SOME NEWER MODEL PROGRAMS LIKE IT TO BE FOUND THERE AT PRESENT. IT DOES MAKE THINGS A LOT EASIER IT INSTALLS FROM A CD TO THE COMPUTER AND YOU CAN COPY YOUR FILES TO FLOPPYS BY CATAGORY AND STORE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE IN CASE OF COMPUTER TROUBBLES. I AM NOT SURE WHAT TO SEARCH UNDER TRY 321 COLLECT AND COLLECTION SOFTWARE OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. GOOD LUCK

Hi All, here is one which seems to be what you are asking for http://www.vpackrat.com/ I don't know it but it seems to be able to do a lot of things - and it is cheap.

A search on the net found this: http://www.collectionstudio.com/en/help/col_custom.htm at least it might be customisable to arms and armour.

For my own collection I just started to use a MS Access database, but setting that up requires a slightly higher level of computer skills ( which I may not possess ). When its done it should be a very powerful tool though. What it lacks is the image handling abilities - or at least I have not figured out how to make nice displays of images. Currently I'm getting round this by using a link to a Picassa web album - which is free until you have a lot of photos e.g. : https://picasaweb.google.com/ChrisJT...eat=directlink
The link can be one of the fields in the database record. I like this solution because it stores pictures offsite in case of computer loss, basically for insurance purposes - no good having a catalogue of your collection in the same place as the collection if it goes up in flames with it! For good measure I have the database backed up in the cloud.

Hi folks,

Some years ago Bill Marsh and I had a good experience with this software, still available on ebay: http://vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=3622
and I think here: http://www.datavillage.com/WindowsSoftware.htm , http://www.datavillage.com/MilitaryTracker.htm from the original software developer.

Regards,
Emanuel

Hi Spunjer, its a note taking/filing system.

It allows you to categorize notes and include images, websites, text, almost anything.

I find it very good for organizing information about my own collection, but as I said, its really more of a note system than a dedicated cataloging application.

Yes Spunjer it's the same software. I had also included a link to a current ebay listing. The screenshots are indeed absent. I don't think I've brought the software with me but If I have it I'll upload some screenshots.

Hi Spunjer,

My mistake, I posted the link to the old thread twice, when I meant to add a new ebay listing...that might be against forum rules however.
The listing has a link to the demo on the datavillage website with the attached screenshot.
