Hi Atlantia.
These are really a very nice pair of 19th c. ottoman cartridge boxes. I say ottoman because of the decoration style with the mosques. Also you are lucky enough because pairs are rare. Best. Ilias |

Possibly first half of 19th c.
Also the Greek name of this kind of cartridge box is "Palaska''. Best. Ilias |

Hi Gene, Hi Ilias,
They are certainly Ottoman and are not rare to find. Michael |

Hi Michael.
In my opinion the rare thing is to find them as a matched pair. Of course you can find many of them as a single piece but as a pair there aren't so many. Best Ilias |

Hi Michael,
Well they are rare to me, as I've never even owned one before ![]() At least its agreed that they are Ottoman. Were they routinely carried in pairs? Anyone have any pictures? Thanks Gene Last edited by Atlantia; 14th June 2010 at 09:43 PM. |

Hi Antlantia.
Usually these cartridge boxes were at the waist of the warrior so there aren't so many pictures to show them. I provide you some paintings from Peter Von Hess 1792-1871 that he made during the Greek War of Independence. You can see some warriors wear pairs of these cartridge boxes. Ilias,
You have perfectly put them into context for me, thank you so much. I had searched online images for ages and not found anything like the pictures you have supplied. Excellent examples, just what I wanted, bravo! Best Gene |
