a few mandau for comment
here are a few of my favorite mandau, and pictured briefly in another thread, and I would like some expert thoughts on time and place for these pieces, I think they are authentic and high quality, but not sure how old, I usually err on the side of the early 20th with everything because I have been surprised before
they have been pictured because I think the carvings are nice and high quality, and the blades do not really resemble other styles I am familiar with in mandau, so would like some help on placing these. I do think the top one is the oldest even if it has a modern sheath. thanks in advance for contributions and commentary. love this site! |

Do you have some close ups of the first scabbard ? The paint appears to be applied on top of (older) carvings. Best regards, Willem |

finally got my resizing together and got a few pictures of the scabbard as well as a couple more of my nicer mandau
1. detail of the tip of the painted scabbard 2. pair of my mandau which have almost identical grip decorations 3. one of the twins, this one has krowit the other does not 4. detail of the non krowit dragon 5. one of my first mandau and probably my oldest, would love your thoughts 6. detail of the dragon on the reverse I finally have this figured out ,so, will slowly be showing my collection here, and would love for some help in placing them in both location and time, as well as likely tribe thanks again in advance, really love mandau and the artistic culture that surrounds them; this forum is one of the places that really helped me understand what I was doing when I went to collect, appreciate especially the other mandau collectors who made me love the artifacts as much as they do. |
