Preserving the knife making tradition

Dear all,
I am writting an article about the tradition of the knifes from Crete, and about the artisans that practise the art today, and i want to mention what is the situation in different countries regarding state support to preserve the continuation of the making of traditional knifes/swords.
Japan comes to mind, where the best examples from each art (including swords and daggers) have been given the status of "national treasure" and also the 2 best artisans from each art/ craft have been awarded the title of "living national treasure" which is very prestigius, and also ensures that these people will teach their art in newer artisans.
Any examples from other places?
